Its a endemic species of fresh water turtle.

This is female of Batagur kachuga. The diet of red-crowned roofed turtles consists entirely of water plants. Adult females lay eggs in March and April. Clutch size varies from 11 to 30 eggs. It is thought that only about 400 females are left in the wilds. National Chambal Sanctuary is the last known stronghold of the Red Crowned Roofed Turtle (Batagur kachuga).
