Type Locality: Americanas
Common, known to be distributed throughout Indian coasts (Bay of Bengal, Arabian and Indian oceans) in India (Casale and Tucker, 2017).
Conservation Status:
This species is listed as Vulnerable in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species (https://www.iucnredlist.org/).
The species preferably nests on insular and mainland sandy beaches throughout temperate and subtropical regions (Casale and Tucker, 2017). Total population size of the species is still unknown, but globally around 200,000 clutches are laid each year by total ten different subpopulations (Casale and Tucker, 2017). The species requires range of geographically separated localities and multiple habitats for its life cycle, such as coastal sandy beaches, oceanic zones and neritic water (Casale and Tucker, 2017). There are various threats leading the decline in the populations of the species, such as fisheries bycatch, consumption and commercial purpose of turtle and eggs, habitat destruction on nesting sites, marine pollution and debris, climate change (Casale and Tucker, 2017).
