This species is listed as Critically Endangered in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species (https://www.iucnredlist.org/).
The species is a river dweller, shows seasonal migration and social hierarchies (Lang et al., 2019). There are certain threats for the species and its habitat, which decreases the quality of the population and its habitat, threats are listed such as dam construction, irrigation, river interlinking, fishing nets, sand mining and boulder collection, exotic fish species and illegal trading (Lang et al., 2019).
Type Locality: Senegal and Ganges
Common, known to be distributed in main rivers and tributaries of Ganges, Indus, Brahmaputra and also resides in Mahanadi-Brahmini system, Godavari-Indravati systems, Chambal river and Girwa river (Lang et al., 2019).
